Two Rejections; Life Goes On

By Steven Goldberg

So yesterday I opened my e-mail to find two form letter rejection notes for a couple of about.com guide positions that I was pretty confident I’d at least get a shot at. They have an intensive 17-day “prep” course that prospective guides must successfully navigate before being promoted to a full guide position. If there are others applying around the same time, it becomes a competition.

Turns out that for both guide sites I had applied for, there were other applicants who had just completed their prep courses about the time that my applications were submitted, so I didn’t even have an opportunity to go through “prep.”

It would have been nice to get the job for either or both guide sites (I wonder if they have any guides manning more than a single about.com site?), but I wasn’t overly disappointed. I’m fortunate in so many ways, and I do have a couple of regular columns I write, and two article assignments in the works as I write this note.

If you’re going to write, and going to submit, you’re going to get rejection letters, and probably a lot more rejections than acceptances. But tomorrow is another day and another opportunity.
